This week, we learned Three Principles for Managing Essential Processing, I would like to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these three principles.
First, the segmenting principle segmented realistic fragments, it can help learners better focus on different learning contents, but they may fail to grasp different learning fragments due to too many segmentations.
Second, the pretraining principle will introduce the content of the course in advance, which can pave the way for learners’ thinking and help learners master the content of the course in advance. However, when learners already know what they are going to learn, it may make them less interested or even lose interest in learning, which will lead to poor learning outcomes.
Third, the modality principle can help learners better participate in the teaching environment. At the same time, the teaching of spoken text and graphics can effectively improve learners’ interest in learning. Nevertheless, excessive situational teaching may affect students pay too much attention to it and it could reduce the efficiency of learning.
Hi, Zhiwen! You really do a good job of analyzing the pros and cons of each one. For the modal principle, people don’t like complex verbal explanations. If it turns into animation to reveal the truth, the brain will take pictures, music and words and work together to solve the information. But as you point out, a lot of animation and situational teaching can distract students (more like kids) from learning other things in a better way.
Interesting posts you have worked on. I like the personal insights. Try to incorporate some more multimedia using some of your new skills such as Canva, or screencasts. Keeping theories and these multimedia principles in mind during your creation of more multimedia will help make your content effective to your audience. Also great to see you and your Pod commenting and reading each others work as I look forward to reading it all term long. Have a nice weekend!
Hi, Zhiwen. Thank you for analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of Three Principles for Managing Essential Processing. I am most interested in the modality principle. The most interesting thing is that the excessive situational teaching you put forward may affect the students’ excessive attention to it, thereby reducing learning efficiency. For example, I have taken a film and television appreciation course. I paid too much attention to the film fragment itself rather than the method behind the appreciation.
